Semillas Green Projects
At Semillas de Amor very little food goes to waste. Our kids have great appetites, and what they don’t eat our chickens do. What is not good for the chickens goes into several of our compost bins. One compost bin is especially for our worms, which our beautiful red wigglers turn into the best worm fertilizer and worm tea for our plants. We do not have to use chemical fertilizers and use far less fertilizer every year because of the richness of our worm fertilizer.
We recycle all paper, plastic and glass. Items that aren’t reused are recycled. Guatemala is only just beginning to recycle and sometimes it is a big effort for us to find someone to take our recyclables. However, we believe it is important to recycle and teach our children to do so.
As the regular light bulbs burn out we are replacing them with eco-friendly light bulbs.
We currently have six solar hot water heaters, providing sufficient hot water for all the kids to shower everyday, laundry and cooking.
We are located in the country with no other homes close by. So we need good outside security lighting. We have five large solar lamps that provide plenty lighting at night. We have no electric bill at the end of the month. The lamps have two batteries to store energy, a large solar panel and a powerful LED lamp. The lamps give us light and safety at no cost.
As funds become available our goal is to use more solar and wind for energy and to expand our recycling and solar program to work with the community.

“Only when I saw the Earth from space, in all its ineffable beauty and fragility, did I realize that humankind’s most urgent task is to cherish and preserve it for future generations.” –Sigmund Jahn, German Cosmonaut
