Seeds of Love: June 2007

Seeds of Love

The mission of Semillas de Amor Children's Village is to provide care, high-level education, and solid futures for Guatemala's at-risk children. In addition to consisting of a home for children who are unable to remain with their families, plans for the children's village include a school, a clinic, and a daycare facility for working mothers. The facility is in the early stages of construction. We are currently seeking donors and volunteers interested in helping make this dream a reality.

The Chefs of Semillas de Amor

Today our bilingual students' Spanish class treated the children and staff of Semillas de Amor to the treats they had prepared. We enjoyed crepes, candied apples, chocolate covered bananas and strawberries, oranges, cucumbers and lots of other goodies. Thank you to Ceci, Gaby, Maria Jose, Daisy and Brayan for all the great snacks!

A Visit to Guatemalan Congress

Today, some of our kids had the opportunity to visit the Guatemalan congress with Luis Enrique Gonzalez Villatoro. Luis Enrique is a past congressman and currently running for congress. It was quite an opportunity for our children. The election for the President of Guatemala as well as congress and mayors is scheduled for this September 9th. Luis Enrique has been an incredible support to us at Semillas de Amor and we wish him a very successful election.

Construction Update

The construction in Parramos continues to move forward even though we have had lots of rain. We are still several thousand dollars short of our building goal and have had many, many families generously donate. Thank you to everyone who has donated thus far. If you haven't yet donated and have considered doing so please do. We are only about $30,00.00 short of our goal.

Building Progress Continues at the Children's Village

Despite the rain, building continues at the children's village site. We have been building without any electricity (the occasional generator) and no running water. So we have had some real challenges but the work continues. The building style of the children's home and school is traditional Antigua colonial and is beautiful. The beauty of the home will give the children and our employees a great sense of pride.

We still have not hit our target goal to finish the building and are in great need of donations. We have families that have had fund raisers to help build the children's village. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn about other children in developing countries that live lives that are very difficult. Please think about how you can help the children. Any amount is appreciated and greatly needed.

Art Appreciation

We have been very fortunate to have a wonderful painter as our children's art teacher at Semillas de Amor. Our teacher, Miguel Angel, paints mostly water colors and you can find him quite often on the streets of Antigua painting any number of beautiful sites. I am always so impressed by the art the children create with Miguel Angel. He is a wonderful teacher and so great with our kids. The photos are of Miguel Angel, with our kids, visiting the ruins of Antigua and an exposition of paintings.
