Seeds of Love: February 2007

Seeds of Love

The mission of Semillas de Amor Children's Village is to provide care, high-level education, and solid futures for Guatemala's at-risk children. In addition to consisting of a home for children who are unable to remain with their families, plans for the children's village include a school, a clinic, and a daycare facility for working mothers. The facility is in the early stages of construction. We are currently seeking donors and volunteers interested in helping make this dream a reality.

Pajama Party at Semillas de Amor

The "big" kids at Semillas de Amor celebrated their new pjs with a pajama party this week. The signs the kids are holding are a little difficult to read, but they say THANK YOU FOR THE PAJAMAS! (in Spanish) Dr. Shirley Fredericks and her family and friends, from Maine, held a huge pajama drive and in return we received boxes and boxes of wonderful new pajamas for the kids. Thank you Dr. Fredericks for such a great idea and the generosity of your family and friends.

The Capital Campaign begins and we need your help!

Dear Friends of Seeds of Love and Semillas de Amor,

Many of you know that the Semillas de Amor Children’s Village has been a long time dream of mine. I am thrilled to tell you that the dream is coming true, not just for me, more importantly, for many, many poor Guatemalan children. We started construction, on the first building, the first week of February and hope to be able to complete construction in the summer of 2007.

Building started with $70,000.00 from Seeds of Love. It will be a relief financially and emotionally to have our own home and not to worry about finding a place to live, landlords, rent and moving 55+ children every two to three years.

We are currently undergoing a Capital Campaign to finish construction. Donations made to our capital campaign are tax deductible through our 501 (c)(3) foundation, Seeds of Love. Please see the Blog post "Building Plans for the Children's Home in Parramos" for more construction information.

At the entrance to our children’s home will be the wall of gratitude, which will have tiles hand painted by our children.
--Silver tile for a $1000.00 donation
--Gold tile for a $2500.00 donation
--Jade tile for a $5000.00 donation.
Donations of $7500.00 and more will build one of our rooms and will have a plaque with the name of the donor at the entrance to the room.

Please think of how you might be able to help achieve this dream for so many impoverished Guatemalan children. We invite all families, foundations, schools, business groups, service clubs and anyone who is interested in joining our campaign.

Needless to say, we are very happy to receive any donation, no matter what amount, to help construct the children’s village.

All donations can be sent to:
Seeds of Love
101 E. Church Street, STE 100
Tarboro, NC 27886

Any questions, please contact me at nancy@semillasdeamor.org

Thank you for your continued support of Semillas de Amor and the children of Guatemala.

Sincerely,

Nancy

Carnivale

On Monday the children at Semillas de Amor celebrated Carnivale. Tradition is to hollow out eggs, paint them and then fill the eggs with confetti and seal the eggs with tissue paper. It is a labor intensive project for the kids, which they love. On Carnivale the kids dress up in costumes and break the confetti filled eggs over the heads of their friends. It is a wild time and lots of fun.

A Visit to La Aurora Zoo

Last Friday 25 children, and lots of staff members, from Semillas de Amor headed off to La Aurora Zoo located in Guatemala City. This was the first visit to a zoo for the majority of the children. Needless to say they had a wonderful time and ended the day with a lunch from Pollo Campero (everyone's favorite).

Building Plans for the Children's Home in Parramos

The Building has begun at the Children's Village site in Parramos!

Our children's home, at the children's village site, will house about 55 children, as well as children who will come from the neighboring village, to attend school and daycare. We have our plans in place and the conceptual drawings and construction began the week of February 5th with a donation from Seeds of Love. Most of the donation money from Seeds of Love came from adoptive parents and their family members. A huge thank you to all of you. Please keep an eye on our Blog as we will have more information as we move forward on construction and will be asking you for your continued generosity and thoughtfulness.
